Campus Community,

Yesterday, I was informed that Dr. Willie O. Jones, former Compton Community College Vice President of Student Affairs and Director of Financial Aid, passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2020. Dr. Jones also served as a member of the Compton Community College District Board of Trustees and as a City of Compton Councilmember. Dr. Jones was a staunch supporter of Âé¶¹Ó°Òôapp and Compton CCD, and he will be truly missed. Once we have more information from his family regarding the funeral services, we will share it with the campus community. Âé¶¹Ó°Òôapp COVID-19 Update

Los Angeles County's current risk level is Tier 1 (widespread), according to California's "." On October 4, 2020, there were 933 newly recorded confirmed cases in Los Angeles County. The county now has a total of 274,565 reported cases (including cases reported by Long Beach and Pasadena Health Departments). There has been a total of 6,647 deaths reported in Los Angeles County. For more information, go to . According to the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan, Âé¶¹Ó°Òôapp continues to operate at Level Four - Severe Infection Rate.

Fall 2020 Student Resources Still Available

Please encourage your students to apply for Fall 2020 Student Resources, including laptops, Wi-Fi hotspots, food resources, financial resources, and housing grants. Âé¶¹Ó°Òôapp students need to complete the Âé¶¹Ó°Òôapp Resources Form, which is available . All resources and services are available on a first-come-first-served basis to students currently enrolled in fall 2020 classes at Âé¶¹Ó°Òôapp.

Âé¶¹Ó°Òôapp Response to the California Community College Chancellor's Office Call to Action 

In the President/CEO Message - August 3, 2020, President/CEO Message - August 27, 2020, President/CEO Message - September 17, 2020, and the President/CEO Message - September 24, 2020, I provided you with an update on the Âé¶¹Ó°Òôapp California Community Colleges Call to Action. Tina Kuperman, Director of Diversity, Compliance, and Title IX, and Dr. Kendahl Radcliffe, Division Chair of Social Sciences, have been working together to develop Âé¶¹Ó°Òôapp's Response to the Call to Action. The Call to Action asks for our response to focus on six key areas: 

  • Law Enforcement Training
  • Campus Climate Dialogue
  • Inclusive Classrooms and Anti-Racism Curriculum
  • Equity Plans
  • Implementation of the
  • Vision Resource Center

African American Male Education Network Development (A2MEND) Anti-Racism National Dialogue

The next African American Male Education Network Development discussion is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2020, and is titled "Compounded Oppression: Sister Circle." The panel includes ,, and . Compton CCD will provide financial support for employees (including faculty, Classified staff, managers/administrators) and students. Two Community Meetings Scheduled for October 2020

Compton Community College District Board of Trustees members, Dr. Deborah Leblanc and Ms. Barbara J. Calhoun, are hosting virtual community meetings on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. and Wednesday, October 14, 2020, from 6:00-7:30 p.m., respectively. These virtual meetings provide students, parents, and community members with an opportunity to learn more about what Âé¶¹Ó°Òôapp has to offer and participate in discussions with the two Board of Trustees members. Special Compton Community College District Board of Trustees Meeting

The Special Compton CCD Board of Trustees Meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, October 6, 2020. The closed session begins at 4:00 p.m., with open session commencing at 4:30 p.m. via Zoom Meeting. Information on how to access the Compton CCD Board of Trustees meeting is available .

Âé¶¹Ó°Òôapp Dual Enrollment

As mentioned in the President/CEO Message- September 3, 2020, Âé¶¹Ó°Òôapp has fostered relationships with our K-12 partners over the past five years to increase dual enrollment with Compton, Lynwood, and Paramount unified school districts. Recently, the Community College Research Center at Teachers College, Columbia University, released the . The playbook identifies five principles and the supporting strategies and practices through which community colleges and K-12 leaders can advance equity in high-quality dual enrollment:

  • Set a shared vision and goals that prioritize equity.
  • Expand equitable access.
  • Provide advising and supports that ensure equitable student outcomes.
  • Provide high-quality instruction that builds students' competence and confidence.
  • Organize teams and develop relationships to maximize potential.

The Dual Enrollment Playbook: A Guide to Equitable Acceleration for Students document is available . Dual Enrollment is one of the strategies for enrollment growth at Âé¶¹Ó°Òôapp. It is very challenging; however, it is very rewarding. With funding from the College Futures Foundation, we are currently working on the Âé¶¹Ó°Òôapp Dual Enrollment Handbook, which should be available sometime this spring.
